no tv means more jewelry

it's been about 2 days since we unplugged the tv and so far things are going amazingly well. ellen has had an abundance of energy and been having lots of tea parties (but with coffee) and just having the time of her life. and we've been going a lot more places. yesterday we went to the library and i checked out some books on making jewelry. for some reason the vast majority of books on the subject are full of incredibly cheesy, do-people-really-wear-that-stuff jewelry, but i did manage to find two good ones. the brown one was published in the fifties and claims to be intended for teaching children. kids in the fifties must have been a lot more talented and responsible than kids today cause it's not that easy. and half of them you have to solder some part or another. but it actually has some interesting pieces and makes it all seem very doable. the purple one has some really cool designs and good instructions, but i think it's aimed at people who already know what they're doing and who have a ton of equipment. i think i'd like to buy both of these books to have on hand as i accumulate the various tools i'm gonna need. this looks like a ton of fun. maybe i'll accomplish my goal of making enough money by making and designing jewelry! maybe i should try one first and see if it actually is simple. see, doesn't this look easy:

Fun! Hurrah!

I have a book recommendation if you're interested. The Basics of Bead Stringing by Debbie Kanan (ISBN 0961535318) is a really good, easy, basic, beginning jewelry making book. The examples are not my taste, but it has easy to follow instructions for all the basic things you need to know, and I think the book is pretty cheap, too. You can just use the techniques to make simpler pieces. I have recommendations for seed bead jewelry books, too, if you're interested in that. :)

what?! you don't think? doesn't it just look like you need some tools and then you start twisting and soldering and bam! there's a gorgeous necklace?

(yes, i'm being slightly sarcastic, but only slightly)
