aaron - i'm taking an old testament survey. but this statement came up in a lesson on form criticism and learning to identify the parts of a text and what genre/setting they originated in etc when we were talking about genre's and lyrics and that a lot of folk music has social justice stuff, not really head banging heavy metal.

and thanks for the suggestions. keep them coming.

Yes, Rage against the Machine is an obvious source of many head banging social justice songs. Some good ones too. I think some of the guys were history majors or poly sci majors from Harvard. Also System of a Down has a good song about the Armenian genocide. (they're Armenian-American and they rock)

Yup. Rage, and System of a Down are very good counter-examples. You can barely find one of their songs that doesn't in some way touch on social justice. And unless you're one of those record-store intellectuals, I think they easily qualify as the heavy-metal/head-banging type of bands.

Great question! I must refer you to one of my all time favorite bands....Resurrection Band! They also go by Rez Band.

They are a hard rock/metal/blues band from Chicago. They were really big in the 80s and 90s. Check out www.resurrectionband.com/

They sing a lot about issues such as aparthied in South Africa, ministring to the needy, the ghetto, etc.

They are a part of a community called JPUSA (Jesus People USA) in Chicago. They live in the inner city and serve the poor.

You may have heard about the Cornerston Festival, a BIG Christian music festival in Illinois every summer. They are behind that.

Anyway check 'em out. GREAT band!
